Salammbô illustrated by Rochegrosse

Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse (1859-1938) grew up surrounded by artists and man of letters. His widowed mother remarried the poet Théodore de Banville, then in the top of his celebrity.
In the family apartment, the young Rochegrosse met with the intellectual elite of the time: Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire and the Parnassians whom Banville is one of the leaders. From childhood, he liked to draw and his sketches are subjected to passing friends. Gustave Flaubert, charmed by a set of views of Carthage, said incidentally :
- Once you have the talent, I'll order you the illustrations of Salammbô.

This remark as a joke come true though 25 years later when the publisher Ferroud inquired Rochegrosse, now established and recognized, to illustrate Salammbô. It was in Barbizon, village of the pre-impressionists, that the illustrator achieved his work, supported by his friends, including the actress Berthe Bady who helped to make a relief map of Carthage inspired by Flaubert's description in the novel's opening. To give life to Salammbô, Rochegrosse is inspired by the bust of the Lady of Elche, discovered in 1897. In the Orientalist's style, Rochegrosse worked with retail the charm of local colours and highlighted what the novel contains of non-European exoticism.

Mucha's arabesques

Slavic, Alfons Mucha (1860-1939) was formed in Vienna and Munich before settling in Paris where he made his name by making illustrations in magazines, newspapers and books. Sarah Bernhardt, seduced by his style, ensured the reputation of the artist from 1894 to 1900 : Mucha became the sole creator of her posters. With an important production (drawings, pastels, sculptures, objects, jewelry), Mucha established himself as one the masters of Art Nouveau. In 1900, he created a spectacular setting for the Universal Exhibition. He decorated the Bosnia and Herzegovina pavilion and got the silver medal. He went on with his illustrator activities and signed the poster advertisements for brands such as Moët et Chandon or Nestlé. Between 1912 and 1926, Mucha put his skills to serve a monumental project to the glory of the Slavic people. Believer and humanist, Mucha thought that art can participate in the uplifting of the soul. He raised money from wealthy American industrialists and got a particular support from Charles R. Crane who invested in The Slav Epic, composed of 20 scenes covering nearly 1,000 square feet of painted canvas. This gigantic work provides an important evidence about the rise of Nationalism in Europe. Settled in Czechoslovakia in 1910, Mucha took part in the birth of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. He drew the weapon of the new nation, stamps, banknotes. In 1939, the country is occupied by Germany and the Republic ends. Mucha, a Freemason, is interrogated by the Gestapo. He died shortly thereafter in July of that year. After the war, forgotten by the communists who do not appreciate this "bourgeois art" , Mucha's work is finally rediscovered in the 60s.

Published in 1900, Clôches de Noël et de Pâques (Bells of Christmas and Easter), collection of three tales by Emile Gebhart, is representative of the art of arabesque of Mucha who frames the text of many floral ornaments.

Joseph Kessel and Russia

Constantly placing himself in the heart of History being built, Joseph Kessel (1898-1979), a writer-reporter, seized with nearly 80 novels and 80 years of existence, the major developments of his time. He wrote in particular on Russia. During the First World War, engaged as volunteer, he was assigned on a mission in Siberia. He published in 1922, his first work, a series of short-stories on the Bolshevik Revolution. The theme of the Russian diaspora is recurrent in his work. Joseph Kessel worked with two major immigrant figures of the Russian illustration : Alexandre Alexeieff for Les Nuits de Siberie - that evokes the atmosphere of Russian cabarets, and Natalia Goncharova for Le Thé du capitaine Sogoub. Alexandre Alexeïeff's shadows

Alexandre Alexeieff (1901-1982), French borned Russian, is considered one of the founders of the animation movie. In 1931, he developed with his partner Claire Parker, a wealthy American student met the previous year, a new technique known as the pin screen. Thousands of pins are mounted on a vertical panel illuminated by a raking light and can be inserted or removed at will. Alexeieff presents in 1933 Night on Bald Mountain, inspired by the music by Modest Mussorgsky, which soon became a classic of animation.
Before being a director, Alexeïeff is an illustrator. After a childhood spent between Turkey and Russia, he settled in Paris in 1921 where he worked as a theater's costumer and designer, for, among others, the Russian Ballets. Having a passion for drawing and engraving, Alexeïeff illustrated many books, both classics of Russian literature and french authors like André Malraux, Philippe Soupault, Joseph Kessel. It is the desire to give life to engravings which will push Alexeïeff to invent his revolutionary animation technique.
After the war, he turned to advertises film-makings (Biscuits Brun, Renault, Esso), which by their experimental technique, are considered true works of art.

Currently, the librairie Loliée offers :

George Barbier's costume dramas

"George Barbier is one of the most valuable and most significant artist of our time, yet so rich in all kinds of talents and minds of any origin. When our time will be fallen like so many others in the dust of dead things, when today's flame will be ashes and dust, it will just take a few watercolors, drawings of Barbier to revive the same taste and spirit of the years that we are living [...] When I look at George Barbier's costume dramas, I have the impression that the characters of those magical stories come to life before me and tempt my imagination. The eluvise Alastair

Alastair - artist name mentioned for the first time in 1907 - is the pseudonym of Baron Hans Henning von Voigt (1887-1969), son of a Prussian lieutenant general. Elusive figure, Alastair spent his youth travelling to major European capitals and New York. Self-taught, he earned his living as a dancer, pianist and draughtsman. This last talent gave him notoriety. He exhibited his first works in 1910, in Cologne and Düsseldolf. During World War I, he took refuge in Switzerland and, once the conflict ended, resumed his frantic pace of life. The inter war period is his most productive. He illustrated Wilde, Barbey d'Aurevilly. His style is marked by a predilection for eroticism and baroque and influenced by Aubrey Beardsley. In 1928, when he works on Manon Lescaut for the English publisher John Lane (who has collaborated with Bearsdley), Alastair gives a supernatural and quite surprising tone to the story.

Small and Large Drinks

"As for France, it seems that the cocktail made its first appearance with the Anglo-American bars shortly after the exhibition of 1889. Column talks about it and newspapers are aware of it. Alphonse Allais is prompt to stuff his tales with those new beverage names which have then all the flavour of novelty : Sherry Cobbler, Mint Julep, pick-me-up, prairie oyster, etc. "

Petits et Grands Verres (Small and Large drinks), published in 1927, offers a choice of the best cocktail recipes, sometimes with fanciful names which titillate imagination and taste buds. The 10 engravings by Jean-Emile Laboureur, who illustrates the book, highlight the delicate etiquette of the manners at the time.

The Twenties by Geo A. Drains

Geo Drains, Belgian painter and illustrator, is best known by bibliophiles for his work published at Le Sagittaire - Simon Kra : Les Complaintes by Jules Laforgue, Le Bordel de Venise by the Marquis de Sade, decorated with scandalous and erotic illustrations that Drains signed under the pseudonym of Couperyn. Close to the young André Malraux who was working at Le Sagittaire Edition, Drains took part in creating this eccentric and bizarre universe from the very beginning 20 years, period influenced by German Expressionism which also see the birth of surrealism.

The collaboration between Alfred Jarry and Geo Drains on Gestes, published in 1920, reflects this kind of black comedy that captures the grotesque aspect of human nature. Thus, the text provocatively entitled "Beating Women" sidetracks on the use of rubber made women, "a material which unfortunately splits and "died" after three years. But there is so man "natural" women who must repair all day long! "

Currently, the librairie Loliée offers :

A gentle and cubist woman by Gierlowski

A young woman has just committed suicide. Near her body, the husband wonders and relives their past.

Repeating a process used by Victor Hugo in The Last Day of a Condemned, a reference given by Dostoyevsky in the author's note of the book, A Gentle Woman refers to a drama of domestic life. The husband analyzes the facts that lead to this fateful moment when his wife decided to throw out the window. He looks again at the poor girl he married, at misunderstandings, at this day she tried to kill him, and then at the reduction of this women to the status of a submitted wife .

Polish Painter close to the Russian avant-garde and influenced by Cubism, Stefan Gierlowski offers a constructivist interpretation of this tragedy and emphasizes the isolation of the young woman in her marriage.

A Gentle Woman was also adapted into a screen movie by Robert Bresson in 1969.

Currently the Librairie Loliée offers :

Tony Johannot, "King of illustration"

Tony Johannot is a great illustration of the 19th century. In Le Voyage où il vous plaira by Alfred de Musset, his trait flirts with the fantastic and recalls his contemporary Grandville, also born in 1803. By contrast, for Mes prisons by Silvio Pellico, his style is rather classical whereas for the illustrated edition of Moliere's works , the trait is more caricatural.

Théophile Gautier sums up the talent and reputation of this generous illustrator :
(in Portraits contemporains).

Currently, the librairie Loliée propose :

Dulac's gems

"Edmond Dulac (1882-1953), colorist influenced by pre-Raphaelism, Japanese prints and Oriental miniatures, is part of a generation that contribute to the revival of illustrated books in the early twentieth century. Born in Toulouse, Dulac moved in England in 1905. Like his elder of fifteen years, Arthur Rackham, he started in the high-growth niche of luxurious illustrated books. Dulac drew from the same fairy tells. His delicate trait and his colors are perfectly rendered through the process of "simili" engraving. Up to the war, Dulac illustrated, each year, a book for the luxurious collection of the French editor Henri Piazza : illustrations reproduced on laminated paper, in a frieze framing. "

Grandville visionary

Jean-Ignace-Isidore Gerard, said Jean-Jacques Grandville, is the illustrator who left his mark, by his inventiveness and his talent as a cartoonist, on the Romantic movement, both literary and artistic, of the first half of the nineteenth century. Formed in the city of Nancy, in the atelier of his father, portraitist and miniaturist, Grandville joins Paris at the age of twenty. In 1829, he knows his first success with Les Métamorphoses du Jour, satire of the social and political life. Through hybrid characters, men by body and animals by the facial appearance, Grandville teases the ridiculous and pretentious of his time, and makes fun of the July Monarchy. His satirical drawings, yet liked by publishers, bother Adolphe Thiers who promulgates, under Louis-Philippe, a law requiring a prior authorization for the publication of drawings.

From 1835 Grandville illustrates books (Fables of La Fontaine, Gulliver's Travels, Robinson Crusoe, Fables of Florian, Don Quixote, etc). Grandville is never happy with his work, spends an incredible amount of time on each drawing. He continues his exploration of zoomorphic beings with Scènes de la vie privée et publiques de Animaux (1842). He is also interested in dreams and visions. The fantasy of Un Autre Monde (1844), Fleurs Animées (1947) and Etoiles (1849) disturb the public who do not recognize the spirit of the satirical cartoonist and prefer more traditional albums like Cent proverbes ( 1845).
In the last years of his life, Grandville goes through many personal difficulties among which the loss of a child. He speaks little, discovers strange shapes in every surrendings. His madness crisis worry his contemporaries.
Interned in an Asylum for Insane of the city of Vanves, Grandville died in 1847, at the age of forty-four, leaving behind this epitaph: "Here lies Grandville, he loved everything, made everything live, speak and walk, alone, he did not know how to find his way. "
Grandville shown throughout his career an amazing ability to transform everyday life in a fantasy world. His prodigious imagination appoints him as a precursor of surrealism.

The enigmatic Badia-Vilato

We know few things of Badia-Vilato, Spanish poster designer. During the civil war, he works for the CNT (National Confederation of Work) and the FAI (Iberian Anarchistic Federation). Under the authority of Pro-Franco, he goes to France. He works for the Air France company and signs some of their more beautiful posters. He continues his engagement against pro-Franco repression and collaborates to the SIA (International Solidarity Antifascist) whose objective is to organize the international aid with Spain. At the end of the Fifties, he settles in South America where his trace is lost.
The work Images de l'Espagne Franquiste, published in 1947 in Paris by the National alliance of the democratic forces of Spain, is representative of the anarchistic and anti pro-franco production of the Forties. On a text printed in three languages - Spanish, French and English - by the movie director Mateo Santos, Badia-Vilato shows virulent and colorful lithographies which point out his surrealist influence. For proof, the two following reproductions:

Visages by Sartre, illustrated by Wols

"Le malheur c'est que je ne vois pas mon visage - ou du moins, pas d'abord. Je le porte au devant de moi comme une confidence que j'ignore et ce sont, au contraire, les autres visages qui m'apprennent le mien. "
In this short text, Jean-Paul Sartre speaks about faces, switching masks, primitive expression of oneself's singularity remodeled by others looks.
Wols completes Sartre's analysis by four drawings, four fragmented faces.
The combination between Sartre and Wols works seems obvious and natural in this not known enough book.

The Rape of the Lock illustrated by Beardsley

Alexander Pope is a major writer from the 18teen english literature. Infant prodigy who writes poems since he is 12, student unseated from Oxford because of his catholic conversion, friend of Jonathan Swift et John Gay, famous for his translation of Homer, Pope is both a satirical and a romantic poet. Suffering since childhood from a form of tuberculosis which difforms his body, Alexander Pope, hot-tempered, pulls back quite soon from social life.
It is not a surprise that Aubrey Beardlsey, connected with Decadents and Symbolists, friend of Oscar Wilde of whom he illustrated Salomé, decided to work on The Rape of the Lock. In this mock-heroic poem in five cantos, Pope makes a parody of Helen of Troy, the story taking place in the Catholic aristocracy (the hero takes of a curl from his lady-love. This simple act generates a conflict between the two families. See the Complete Poem). The illustrations show the delicacy, sensuality and richness of Beardsley work. Tormented artist, also suffering of turberculosis, Beardsley dies officially from illness, and unofficially commits suicide at 26 years old, leaving a singular work, representative of the english Art nouveau.

Currently, The Librairie Loliée can show you :
  • [Beardsley] - Pope - The Rape of the Lock. Londres, Leonard Smithers, 1896, binding from the editor. Five original illustrations from Aubrey Beardsley.

Albert d'Arnoux alias Bertall (1820-1883) was a caricaturist, an illustrator, a writer, a photographer and a prolific artist. Disciple of the atelier of Drolling, Bertall begins his career illustrating popular novels known as novels « à 4 sous ». Balzac, who likes the style and talent of Bertall, asks his editor to give him more work. After that, Bertall cooperates with Gavarni at the illustration of Le Diable à Paris (1844-1845). He also illustrates Les Petites misères de la vie conjugale in 1845-1846 with the advices of Balzac. In the years 1860-1870, Bertall publishes his own texts with the Hachette editor.
